Research Description
I am currently a postdoc with Jack Williams in the Center for Climatic Research
and the Department of Geography at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
I am working with members of the NEOTOMA
database team to integrate Late Pleistocene mammal and plant communities
of eastern North America with paleoclimatic change to understand whether
community responses are synchronous in space and time.
Specifically, I'm addressing several questions:
- What were the distributions of no-analog plant and animal communities
in eastern North America over the past 21,000 years?
- Did no-analog plant and animal communities occur at the same time and place?
- Are these communities responding to a common environmental forcing?
Which environmental factors best predict no-analog communities?
- How did plant and animal communities respond to abrupt climatic changes in the past?
- How does error in radiocarbon chronologies influence our estimates of event timing?
Can we use sites wtih good chronologies to revise sites with poor chronologies?
As part of this project, I am revising pollen core chronologies across eastern
North America and gathering new dates on key mammal fossil deposits so that we
can nail down the timing of key changes in the biological communities.
