Case Studies using the 200-Year Archaeoclimatology MCM

The original version of the Archaeoclimatology Macrophysical Climate Model (MCM) had an output resolution of 200-years on the uncalibrated radiocarbon years (rcybp) time scale. Recent work has resulted in a 100-year output model on the calendar time scale. The following case studies highlight examples from the literature that relied upon the 200-year model.

MCM output can also be interpolated and analyzed on a more regional scale.

Map of Wi

An animated map of the precipitation history for the state of Wisconsin for the past 11,000 years can be viewed here.

River discharge can be modeled for a given location on the river.

Modeled Nile discharge

Click here for a case study of the discharge of the Nile River compared to proxy reconstructions.

The site-specific nature of the MCM allows for the comparison of neighboring regions.

Mycenaean graph

Archaeologists have suggested that severe drought contributed to the decline of Mycenaean culture in ancient Greece.

Archaeoclimatology MCM models have been completed for more than 3,000 stations and more than 250 rivers.

A list of some of the many published case-study applications of the MCM can be found here.
